7a Sylvester Road
Earle Architects extended and refurbished this mid 19th Century warehouse in East London in 2007. The building is the practice's home and includes office space, meeting facilities and a workshop. A one bedroom rooftop apartment is housed within a steel frame extension which raised the building by an extra storey, for which lengthy negotiations were required with the local planning authority.
The building occupies a site in the Town Hall Square Conservation Area where Sylvester Road meets Sylvester Path in Hackney. Extensive structural strengthening works were necessary as a result of water damage to the floors. A high proportion of construction waste was recycled and the redundant timber roof joists were used in the re-fit to form window sills and work tops. The 14 inch wide roof sheathing boards were recycled in another building opposite at 2 Sylvester Road to provide a salvaged floor.
The lead cladding to the extension - a stipulation of the local planning authority - features lead lettering which was cast in our own workshop on the ground floor using casting sand sourced from the Whitechapel Bell Foundry.
Internally we have completely lined all internal walls to provide excellent thermal insulation and we installed a highly efficient Ecotech boiler.
