Surrey Square School

Southwark, London

02

This exciting new addition to Surrey Square School's playground serves as a new dining facility and provides much needed additional floor space for the infant and junior school. Critically, the building does not reduce the external play area on this tight urban site by providing an accessible landscape over its concrete dome roof. Skylights puncture the dome and bring natural light down into the dining room while a stainless steel slide invites the pupils to play above.

Because of the unique funding stream via a special purpose vehicle, the building had to navigate the planning system, be detailed designed, tendered and constructed in less than 9 months.

The building is also available to the wider community for activities and events and this has been taken up with enthusiasm by neighbours on the Aylesbury Estate after the building was officially opened in late June 2010 by Master Chef Judge and TV presenter, Greg Wallace, himself a local Bermondsey pupil in his youth.

Following its completion in 2010 the building has received a Green Apple Silver Award, runner up prize in the community benefit category at the RICS Awards and commendations by the Concrete Society and Civic Trust.

Earle Architects continues to work closely with Surrey Square School and following the completion of the dining building we have refurbished areas of the existing school and a new Early Years Centre is planned in the future.
