The Clapham Picturehouse first opened its doors in 1992 after the renovation of a Victorian snooker hall. In January 2007 Earle Architects were appointed to carry out a refurbishment of the interior and re-design of the exterior signage. At the time of the project, cinemas were not as profitable as they have been in recent times and we made the design of an integrated bar a priority to help boost revenue. The refurbishment consisted of works to the ground floor bar, lobby, foyer area and toilets.
The efficient design successfully links the bar and cinema, maximises seating space and helps decrease running costs. The bar is well established as a venue in its own right and draws in visitors separate to the footfall of the cinema.
The project was completed in December 2007 and paid for itself within the first year. Clapham is now Cityscreen's most successful cinema in the UK.
