No Second Night Out Mare Street

Hackney, London

This project will reconfigure an underused basement space within an existing building to create a 'hub' for a homelessness service called No Second Night Out.

No Second Night Out is a pilot project by St Mungo's aimed at ensuring those who find themselves sleeping rough in central London for the first time need not spend a second night on the streets.

The Hub will provide a cafe area, assessment rooms, toilets and showers for those who find themselves in need of the project's services. Staff offices and a staff room will also be created.

The design seeks to maximise natural daylight in the basement space by retaining a double height void and installing a glass walkway to a private outdoor courtyard. The cafe lounge is the main space in the hub, which encourages interaction and conversation in an informal and relaxed setting. The use of timber softens the interior to avoid an institutional feel.
